Influenza-S. pyogenes co-infection
Michael Chaussee is an Associate Professor at the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota, USA. He received his B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Minnesota in 1989. He received his Ph.D. degree in Microbiology and Immunology in 1995 from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Joseph J. Ferretti. He conducted postdoctoral research at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases with Drs. John Swanson and James M. Musser, among others. In 2001, he joined the Sanford School of Medicine. His research efforts have focused on the characterization and regulation of virulence-associated exoproteins produced by Streptococcus pyogenes. In this regard, he has utilized a number of genome-scale approaches including genomics, proteomics, DNA microarrays and RNA-seq. In addition, he has investigated the molecular bases underpinning polymicrobial infections with a focus on influenza-streptococcal superinfections.
